Chinese Art at the Pacific Art League

Posted by Yelena Shabrova

There is a wonderful exhibition in the Main Gallery of the Pacific Art League this month – Hau Pei-Jen: Fifty Year Retrospective. Mr. Hau is an instructor at PAL and a well-known innovator in the “splash ink and color” tradition in Chinese painting. His art combines traditional Chinese painting and modern Western techniques, it’s almost abstract sometimes and very captivating.

Photography Today at PAL

Pacific Art League has a photography only exhibition this month – Photography Today.

What caught my eye was all black and white photographs: Remnant by Bill Moy, Parched Earth 1 and Parched Earth 2 by Meggi Raeder, and Brothers Play Go by Hiroshi Suzuki. Couldn’t find the last photo anywhere online.

On a photography-related note, Modernbook Gallery left Palo Alto for San Francisco. When I saw their place closed and disarranged I thought they were gone for good. Apparently all is not lost, but it’s sad to see that the Palo Alto Art Walk got shorter.

Figures & Faces at PAL

I missed the reception at Figures & Faces yesterday at PAL, but going to the show on a quiet day has its own advantages: you can enjoy each artwork in quiet and for as long as you wish without inconveniencing others.

So, here is what caught my eye (what’s puzzling, none of the pieces below won a place or a honorable mention).

Lisa Rosenstreich - Dylan. Colored pencil on paper, 72" x 50"

Just a huge unframed sheet of paper, beautifully layered strokes. I liked that serious expression on the boy’s face.

Wonderful small masterpiece, could not pull myself away from it.
