- Alum Rock Park - colored pencil on drawing paper, 11" x 8.5"
Alum Rock Park, the first municipal park in California, does not have any alum and never did. It received the name because of thenardite-containing rocks at the entrance that were mistaken for alum. Once a man-made attraction, the park is now focused on preserving its natural beauty, and only remains of old stonework here and there remind of the times long gone. The park is located at the narrow valley along the Penitencia Creek which becomes almost dry during fall and winter; then its rocks of various shades of gray and all sorts of interesting shapes show up in their full beauty.
